So Mattel dropped their BMR1959 line and except for the AA curvy girl, they are all pretty 'meh' for me.
First up is my favorite out of this line. This face is gorgeous and makeup is on point.
(No ugly light pink lipstick on a dark skin Barbie - yay!)
For me, she's the only one worth having.
Second is Babs. For me, she's just 'ok'. I'm not a fan of smiling dolls or blonde dolls so she wasn't on my radar...until I saw her glammed up on the IG page of serendipitous_wine_n_coffee here.
Next up is the bombshell of a doll that Mattel dropped on us. They really took a risk with this one, which I commend them for - they have been playing it safe (read: boring) for too long.
But how are conservative parents not screaming bloody murder?
Most collectors, though, seem to love him.
Me? Not sure yet. His face is so beautiful, he reminds me of Mr Jay on ANTM.
But, Mattel, how in the name of all that is holy do you have his face beat to the heavens but your "fashionistas" don't have a scrap of makeup on them?????!!! Can we get this face up on other dolls??? THIS is a face - not those boring, makeup-less, earrings-less, ugly smiling faces you call Fashionistas!!
That said, I'd probably only get him to re-body one of my Kens and I told myself I wasn't buying expensive dolls for their bodies anymore. Mattel just needs to sell articulated bodies IN EVERY SHADE!!
Now, I like the concept of Blasian (Black + Asian)...if that's what this girl is supposed to be... but the execution is terrible.
Her braids are nice but this is one of the few Mbili faces that didn't impress me.
A 'fail' for me.
Oh dear, Lazy Mattel couldn't be bothered to come up with another male sculpt so here's a recycled face with a man-bun. Blah.
Again, I'd just get him to re-body another doll and I'm not throwing money at Mattel until they start listening to their adult collectors.
How is it that Integrity Fashion Royalty can come up with a gazillion male sculpts but Lazy Mattel only has like 5??? Ugh.
The most disappointing doll of this new line, though, is Kira.
What a chance they had with this, bringing back a much loved face... and they go and spoil it. She looks even more cartoony than the Kiras from the 90s. Sigh.
Overall, I'd give this line 2.5 out of 6 stars.
